Wednesday 5th Oct. – Swim, walk ( Cirque de Moureze )***** travel to
coast – sunny and hot
Our third night in a row at the lovely free Lac du Salagou and wifi too!!!
Up early and both exercise as the sun rises :) Then it’s to the lac for a
swim before breakfast and I am straight in with no messing about and Mag
has already done several lengths!!! I then swim around the corner to where
Peter lost has windsurfing fin yesterday and found it really quickly :) he
was pleased!!!! Then Pete and I come across a crayfish in the shallows and
I scoop him out on my hand, he is a lot prettier than the river ones we saw
earlier and although not overly pleased to be on my hand didn’t use his
massive pincers on my fingers!!! And we managed to get some nice close up
pics before putting him back. It’s then back to the van for breakfast,
two French pastries – not the best start to the day for our waist line :(
but very yummy :) Then we were getting ready to leave by sorting the van
out when I discovered Mag had another puncture in her front wheel so took
the bike over to Pete’s van and had a nice hour or so sitting in the sun
chatting while I mended the puncture using Pete’s tips from yesterday did
a good job. Lunch time so with no little white van selling bread at the lac
we had tuck biscuits and cheese :) Then at about two we were ready to hit
the road said goodbye to P & J and headed up into the hills to investigate
the Cirque de Moureze, this is truly another wonderful spot and the scenery
with the red rock and vibrant green trees and field after field of vines is
a real pleasure :) We drove to the nice old village of Moureze, parked in
the two Euro car park which was free, got a map with four walks from one to
four hours and decided as it was very hot to do the hour walk. You start by
walking through the old village, a quick look in the church – it’s been
awhile since we had visited one and I was getting withdrawal systems!!! And
the stain glass was very nice :) and then it’s up a path to the fantastic
standing rocks. The path got harder the higher we went and we were
scrambling over all sorts of narrow gullies and around huge boulders –
one of the best walks we have done and because of the heat we were glad we
only did the hour but would like to come back when it is cooler and attempt
the longer walks. After tea and cake we headed for the coast, again hills
and vineyards spread out as far as the eye could see :) Then it was down to
the flat and we drove along miles of tree lined roads to Beziers followed
by hookers lining the road to Narbonne!!! A sorry sight, pretty girls in
really isolated places – what a worry! Mag found us a nice coastal road
on the map and we arrived at Gruissan as the sun was setting. Found our
parking spot in the hill just past Gruissan with views to the sea over the
salt beds and had a delicious chicken curry – another top day :)
